Nashville Boy Suffers TBI in Hit and Run

HitRun

A twelve year old boy from Nashville has been released from a rehabilitation facility after a hit and run accident left him with a serious traumatic brain injury. Jay Fizer was riding his bicycle on March 8 when a car struck him and left the scene. He suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) that required the minor to be placed in a medically induced coma in order to ease the swelling on his brain. In the last couple of weeks, Fizer was awakened from his coma, placed in a wheelchair, and is now relearning how to walk and talk. He will continue going to outpatient rehabilitation and physical therapy for at least the next six weeks. A driver was arrested and charged with the hit and run accident three weeks after the incident.

The Impact of Traumatic Brain Injuries

Traumatic brain injuries can cause serious harm to victims that sustain a TBI in an accident. Severe cases can result in brain swelling, blood clots, and other serious complications for victims. Danger signs of a serious traumatic brain injury after an accident include the following symptoms:

  • Worsening headache
  • Weakness, numbness, and decreased coordination
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Slurred speech
  • Prolonged loss of consciousness or inability to wake
  • One pupil is larger than the other
  • Increased confusion, agitation, and restlessness
  • Clear fluid draining from ears and nose

If you suspect a TBI after an accident it is essential that you seek immediate medical treatment. Failure to treat a traumatic brain injury can lead to permanent disability or even death for victims.

Compensation for TBI Victims

Getting full compensation for victims of traumatic brain injuries is critical after an accident because in many cases a TBI requires extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation. The costs of medical care can seem overwhelming unless you have a legal professional on the case. Compensation for TBI injuries in Tennessee includes coverage of all economic and noneconomic costs. Economic damages compensate for all out of pocket expenses, such as medical bills, lost wages, property damage, and the loss of future income and benefits. Noneconomic damages cover the victim’s pain and suffering, emotional distress, disability, disfigurement, and loss of enjoyment of life.

In the worst TBI accidents, where the injuries prove fatal to the victim, the family can also seek compensation in the form of wrongful death. Damages for wrongful death includes all final medical expenses, funeral and burial costs, and compensation for the loss of love, guidance, support, and companionship of the victim.
